Hearst Ranch Conservation Photography

The historic working landscape at Hearst Ranch will be preserved forever thanks to one of the largest land conservation easements in California history, a joint effort with the California Rangeland Trust, the American Land Conservancy and the State of California.

Robert Glenn Ketchum

Robert Glenn Ketchum, our resident conservation photographer, began photographing the Hearst Ranch during the conservation project. Over several years of regular visits to the ranch, Ketchum has created a unique visual library of the property’s diverse habitats and many seasonal moods. The availability of these prints is exclusive to the Hearst Ranch store and Web site.

Mr. Ketchum is a renowned photographer of America’s wild places and a leading environmental advocate. His fine photographic print work is represented in most of the major museum collections in the United States, including the Museum of Modern Art (NY), the National Museum of American Art (DC), the Museum of Contemporary Art (LA) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY), to name a few. Ketchum was part of the first photography exhibition ever to be held in the White House, and for 15 years served as curator of photography for the National Park Foundation. He is the author of 10 publications, including “The Tongass: Alaska’s Vanishing Rain Forest,” and since 1968 he has had over 500 one-man and group shows worldwide.

The combination of his powerful imagery and his personal activism have made the results of his many projects remarkably successful and placed Ketchum at the forefront of American artists expressing their concern for the environment. He is the recipient of numerous photography, environmental, and humanitarian honors, including the United Nations Outstanding Environmental Achievement Award.

In its centennial edition, Audubon Magazine recognized Ketchum as one of the 100 people “who shaped the environmental movement of the 20th Century.” American Photo Magazine named him one of the 100 most important people in photography.
