Hearst Ranch Cowboy Photography
The Hearst Ranch has operated in much the same way since it was bought by Senator George Hearst in 1865. Although we have adopted a good deal of both science and technology, most of the work on the ranch is still done by cowboys on horseback. We are lucky to work with professional photographers, like Richard Field Levine, to chronicle out cowboy heritage, as well as talented amateur photographers like Ranch Manager, Cliff Garrison.
Richard Field Levine
Richard Field Levine has chronicled our ranch operation for the past few years. Richard is an official photographer for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and was selected by the PRCA to shoot all behind-the-chutes action at the 2001 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.
His action photos as well as his candid, behind-the-scene shots have been well received and published widely and have served as models for paintings by well-known cowboy artists. He contributed photos to the recently published book “True Horsemanship Through Feel” by the late Bill Dorrance.

Cliff Garrison
Ranch Manager Cliff Garrison has worked at the Hearst Ranch for over 20 years. He received a digital camera for Christmas a few years ago, and he has been photographing the ranch ever since. Although he will take pictures from his truck, or even from the cockpit of a helicopter, he prefers to take his them from the saddle.
