<main-content>h2. Why we do what we do

_By Cliff Garrison, Manager, Hearst Ranches_

p. As cowboys, we do this type of work because it's our life. The freedom of working in God's creation, the feel of nature, appreciating the environment, the responsibility of caring for our families, the animals, and the land – we love what we do.

p. As a business, it is a way to lower our production costs and increase the value of our cattle in the marketplace. We strive to make a good business out of doing the right thing.

<img src="/publisher_page_images/0000/0010/about_philosophy_2.jpg" class= "full_center" title="Why we do what we do 2" alt="Why we do what we do" />

p. As producers, it is a way to provide a quality, healthful, sustainable source of protein for out customers, who want to know how their food is raised, who want to have confidence in the safety of their food, and who want to do business with companies who are striving to limit their carbon footprint on the environment.

<img src="/publisher_page_images/0000/0011/about_philosophy_3.jpg" class= "full_center" title="Why we do what we do 3" alt="Why we do what we do" />

p. As cattlemen, it is a way to help to diversify our industry and foster alternative methods and choices for both cattle producers and consumers.

p. It's historic. Grass-fed beef is not something new. Rather, raising cattle on grass is both an ancient practice and one that is standard in much of the modern world. Sometimes, the old ways are the right ways. We believe that our methodology is the right one for us.

p. We favor producing and marketing a locally-grown product to sustain both ourselves and our local community. We are working with local chefs and a local, owner-operated food distribution company on the Central Coast of California to build a local food system where our product travels as little as possible in its journey for the ranch to the plate.</main-content>
