Hearst Corporation buys meat packing plant in Bankruptcy Sale
Kaney Foods to reopen and operate the plant as White Stone Meat Packing
PASO ROBLES, CALIFORNIA – The Hearst Corporation has purchased building that formerly housed the Paso Robles Meat & Sausage Company in Paso Robles, California. The sale was approved June 9 in Federal Bankruptcy Court in Santa Barbara. The meat-processing facility had been in receivership since June 2009 and was closed by the court last March.
Hearst will lease the shuttered plant at 3450 Riverside Ave. to Kaney Foods, a well-known food service company operating in San Luis Obispo County since 1955. Kaney plans to reopen the plant in late July as White Stone Meat Packing. The facility is now USDA certified, number 40268, and will provide quality butchering and custom cut-and-wrap services for the local ranch community, wild game hunters and local fairs.
“We are especially committed to opening in time for the Mid-State Fair,” said John Kaney, owner and CEO of Kaney Foods. “We are a full-service company, and we look forward to continuing our tradition of offering a quality product that meets the needs of our local ranchers, markets and restaurants.”
The Hearst Corporation has been in the cattle business since 1865 and produces grass-fed beef on ranches in San Simeon and Cholame.
“We have worked with John Kaney and Kaney Foods for a number of years and know first-hand their integrity and the quality of service they provide,” said Hearst Ranch Beef Division Manager Brian Kenny. “We are confident this new business venture will be a great success.”
